Does Education Make Us Better People? The Young Turks Had Their Doubts. They Believed That Education in Turkey Corrupted Those Who Received It!

"Merkez-i Umumi Genelgeleri [1916 veya 1917] HSDHADB/4/3*(s. 1),[1] Maarif [2]

ENGLISH:

I finally finished reading a book that had been sitting on my desk for quite some time. It contains minutes of meetings and internal circulars issued by the Central Committee of the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) in 1916–1917.

The documents contain some extraordinary information. But one passage, concerning education, particularly caught my attention.

Here is what the CUP Central Committee had to say:

"There is a peculiar situation that distinguishes Turkey from other countries. Among other nations, the people of the highest character and moral integrity are generally those who have received the most education. In our country, however, the opposite is usually true. In Turkey, those who cause the greatest harm to the nation are precisely those who have benefited most from religious or secular education.

Many events we have witnessed since the proclamation of the Constitution confirm this paradoxical truth. The conclusion to be drawn is that, in Turkey, religious schools and modern educational institutions corrupt the morals and character of those they educate. What explains this peculiar characteristic that distinguishes us from other nations?"

— CUP Central Committee Circulars, 1916 or 1917 (HSDHADB/4/3)

Reading this, I couldn't help thinking about the recent stock market scandals in Turkey. Organized groups manipulate stock prices, sometimes driving them up by an astonishing 10,000 percent! Ordinary investors rush in, hoping to make a fortune. Then the organizers sell off their shares, pocket the money, and leave everyone else holding virtually worthless stocks. A classic pump-and-dump scheme.

And guess what? These financial geniuses are all university graduates! Some even went to the United States to complete their education—and apparently perfected the art of emptying other people's pockets.

Could it be that education itself corrupted them?

Of all the things I could have imagined, I never thought I would find myself wondering whether the Young Turks might actually have been right about something!

What do you think?
